Kerbal Space Program has you run the space program of an alien race, assembling spacecraft from a range of parts that fly, or fail, according to aerodynamic and orbital physics. You launch crews into orbit and beyond, exploring moons and planets, and can build bases and space stations. It is a single-player simulator with room for trial and error. It rewards curious, patient players who enjoy engineering problems and experimentation.
